Toy Tuesday: Anal Toys

Don't worry, chickies, I haven't forgotten about you; my computer broke down so it's been difficult to get my posts out. However, I did get some new goodies from the awesome people at Pipedream, so here I am with a new Toy Tuesday.

Today's Toy: Anal toys

I've put off these toys for a while because I was a little hesitant to try them out for myself, and I know I'm not the only one. Anal is normally preconceived as a topic reserved for homosexual men and porn stars, but it's my goal to remove that taboo, or at least help.
Contrary to popular belief, anal toys are great for men and women, and you don't have to be gay to enjoy them. Unfortunately, there are negative connotations about men enjoying anal stimulation, but this has nothing to do with sexual preference. Because many men are afraid to discover their P-spot, they're missing out on a lot of fun. And ladies, don't think that men have all the fun; because this is normally such an "off limits" area, you might be surprised at how different and good it feels. There are plenty of nerve endings there, so it is a very erogenous zone for both sexes.
  • Plugs: Similar to a dildo, basic plugs are usually thinner at the tip and flared out at the bottom. They have an additional base to prevent the toy from going too far into the body. Beginner plugs may begin at 2-3 inches long, and can be as large as 8-10 inches. You can choose from vibrating or non vibrating models, and some come in varied shapes, although the flared look is a common design element.

  • Beads: These sexual aids consist of a string of beads that may or may not include a ring at the end for easy extraction. Some toys vary in girth, either having consistently sized beads or going from smallest to largest. They can also vary in length, from an average of 3-5 to 8-10 beads per strand. Beginners are recommended to use an all soft maleable jelly product. Anal beads can remain in the body for a feeling of fullness during sex, however, many people use them to increase orgasms by pulling them out slowly during climax.
  • Prostate massager: Sorry girls, this product is specially aimed for the men. It's curved design resembles a G-spot vibrators to better reach a man's prostate and perinium easily. Just like plugs, you can choose from  vibrating or non vibrating.

Now, before you get all gun ho and shove something up your third hole, here are some basic Do's and Don't's of anal:
  • Do ease yourself into it. Instead of rushing in, ready the area first by inserting one finger first, then gradually adding more. Patience is a virtue with this one.
  • Don't go in dry. Since your anus doesn't produce any natural lubrication always have some handy. Every time you enter, make sure whatever you're using is nice and wet. Relive your slip n' slide days, expect now, the toy is you and your ass is the kiddie pool at the end.
  • Do use a toy with a flared base. If you've ever had the misfortune of using a suppository, then you know your rectum can act as a vacuum. The flared base prevents the toy from going any deeper than it should. You don't want to be one of those people rushed to the ER with random objects stuck up there. (The peanut butter jar? Knock it off. No dog is going to dig that deep)
  • Don't transfer/share toys in the same session. Ladies, when using anal toys, don't go from anus to vagina. There are certain bacterias that your vagina is not used to fighting, so avoid an infection and stick to one hole. Sharing is not caring in this case.
  • Do experiment. Try different toys to get different sensations. Beads? Plugs? Vibrating? Glass or metal? Sure! Why not? Just please avoid the hamsters, they've been through enough.
  • Don't be afraid to reach your limit. If you feel overwhelmed by the toy at some point, make sure to tell your partner you've had enough.
  • Do be relaxed. Trying anything new tends to make some people nervous, but the more you tense up your body, the harder or more painful the experience will be. If this is your first time trying any anal play, make sure you are as relaxed as possible. Try laying on your back and propping your lower back with a pillow. Don't do doggy style! It looks great on film, but it's a bad idea for first time users. Trust me, I had to learn the hard way, and it put me off for years. If you're still nervous, try taking a warm bath before, to relax your muscles.
  • Don't use numbing creams/sprays/etc. Although these are readily sold at sex stores everywhere, I never recommend them to my customers. If a toy is too intense or big, you want to be aware of what your body's telling you. If you're numb, you won't know if the area is being stretched too far or even torn.
  • Do have fun! That's the point right?

Anal toys are the same as other products when it comes to care. All toys can be cleaned with lukewarm water and antibacterial soap. To sanitize, glass and silicone can be placed in boiling water for 2 minutes,  while metal and plastic toys can be wiped down with rubbing alcohol. If you're using jelly products, use a condom over it for easier maintainance. Store somewhere cool and free of humidity, and remember to take the batteries out of any vibrating plugs.

For all of you who only see this area as an "exit only", my former self included, throw all your inhibitions to the wind and say, "fuck it". You might just like what you find, and if not, at least you gave it a shot. A pain in the ass only lasts a few hours, but sexual experience is forever :)

Difficulty to use:
Anal toys can be a little tricky at first, but once you've found your level of comfort they're a cinch. Make sure to be relaxed beforehand, as I mentioned before, and you shouldn't have any difficulty.

Versatility:
Technically, you can shove anything up there, so there's a ton of variety (I'm sure my friends remember a very vivid snapchat of a cowboy and a Jack Daniels bottle...you're welcome, again.), but when it comes to toys specifically made for anal, styles are a bit more limited. Thankfully, there are plenty of sizes and materials to choose from.

My Rating:
This review is for Pipedream's glass anal plug #48 from their Icicles collection.

As I wrote above, I was apprehensive about trying any anal toys since I had a couple bad incidents in the past. However, my curiosity about the products grew and I decided to give it another try. "If at once you don't suceed, try, try again" applies here, right? Anyway, this is not only my first time trying out an anal toy, but a glass one as well. Let me tell you, I loved it! The toy's design is very comfortable and feminine; I love the color and flower at the end. The glass made it easy to slip in, and was just the right weight. The material also contributed its own sensations as it started off cool and then adjusted to my body heat quickly. The craftsmanship was excellent, no seams in the product and clean up was incredibly easy. I would definitely recommend this item if you're thinking of venturing into glass and/or anal toys. I can't wait to try out more glass toys in the future (hint, hint).

Guy's Rating:
He didn't try it out for himself, but I believe if he had to rate it as a turn on factor seeing it in me, he'd give it five lips as well.

  1. I loved your review, but I had two quick counterpoints.

    1) While jelly/soft toys are more comfortable for beginners, they are porous and sometimes toxic depending on the quality of the toy. Instead, choose something from high-quality silicone. The silicone can be sanitized after use, making it a much better option.

    2) Rear entry is actually recommended for anal intercourse! It actually gives the recipient more control over speed and depth of penetration, as they "back" into it (while bearing down with their rectal muscles).

Everything else was spot on, though; great read!

  2. Thanks for the info Vanessa!

A reader also suggested another good position for beginners would be "rider on top", since it allows you to control entry easier.
